One of the first recorded drawings of a bearing, or anti-friction bearing as they are sometimes called, was Leonardo da Vinci c: 1503. 

In simple terms bearings help reduce friction between moving parts. the first modern recorded patent on bearings was awardwd to Philip Vaughan a British inventor and ironmaster from Carmarthen in 1794. His was the first modern bearing design, with the ball running along a groove in the axle assembly.

in 1898 Henry Timken obtained a Patent for the tapered roller bearing and a year later the famous Timken Roller Bearing Axle Company was incorporated in St. Louis USA.
